One account that quickly comes to mind is a young mother that brought her small child to us. She was holding him close to her chest as the child laid so limp it seemed as if he were dead or at least unconscious. The mother had tears flowing down her face as she was begging us for a miracle. Her son was about to die from starvation. When asked what she had been feeding this young child she answered by saying: “the only thing I had – flour and water.” Can you imagine that the only thing this small boy had been eating was flour and water? When asked why this was the only thing that he was fed, the mother replied: “because it’s the only thing that I had. My husband is gone, my father and mother are dead, and I have no one to help me.
This is a typical case in Haiti. The average life span is 55 to 57 years of age. Because of the lack of food and medical help most of the people don’t have a very long life. Those who do survive are many times weak and unable to care for their children. Many of the older children have to care for their younger siblings and try to survive as best as they can. Even with this the older children are weak and sickly themselves. It’s some ofthe worst conditions in the world. These children desperately need life-saving nourishment. Kids Against Hunger has been that life-saving food that the children need.
The young child that I mentioned was saved! He is doing wonderful now! His body has healed and is flourishing mainly because of the Kids Against Hunger. Thank you very much for this. Your food is not only improving the quality of life for thousands of children but you have given many of them a hope for a flourishing future. This food to us and to these children is everything!
