Kids Against Hunger performs its mission through a network of food packaging “satellite” operations that extends across the U.S. and Canada. As of June 2010, this network includes about 80 locations across the U.S. states and Canada (as well as a Division location managed by Headquarters). Satellites are nonprofit organizations affiliated with Kids Against Hunger that package the proprietary Kids Against Hunger formulated food for the malnourished and starving children of the world. A satellite must have a facility in which it can set up its manual packaging equipment and store supplies and the packaged food. The actual food packaging is done by volunteers; consequently the satellite needs the ability to attract, schedule, and supervise volunteer food packagers. In order for a satellite to be successful long-term, a strong team of leaders is needed, and the satellite must have the ability to raise funds to cover program costs on an ongoing basis.
This is a decentralized and highly entrepreneurial organization. The majority of satellite locations operate under their own 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Each satellite signs a licensing agreement with the Kids Against Hunger Headquarters office in New Hope (MN). We require some reporting, but this also governs product content and quality, as well as adherence to best practices. This model has allowed our program to reach into smaller communities and to develop new and innovative ways to engage people in more communities. We have also been able to establish relationships with organizations such as Kiwanis and Rotary, and many churches of widely varying denominations and faiths. In 2009 alone, and through the efforts of approx. 171,000 volunteers, over 48 million meals have been provided for those in need around the world.
